Union Puertorriquena (UP)
Union Puertorriquena is a student organization at the University of Wisconsin-Madison that serves
the Puerto Rican community studying and living in Madison. The group enjoys a close working
relationship with other multicultural student organizations on campus. The goals of Union Puertorriquena
are to foster unity and increase awareness of Puerto Rican issues within the community. To this end,
the group organizes several educational, social, cultural and political activities throughout the
year, including the publication of its monthly newsletter, Boricua!, the celebration of Puerto
Rican Month, and other events for the Madison community.
Puerto Rican Month
Union Puertorriquena has organized events for Puerto Rican Month for over fifteen years. Each year
the organization invites guest speakers to discuss subjects of concern to the Puerto Rican community.
Union Puertorriquena also sponsors films, dances, makes presentations of graduate student's dissertation
topics and hosts Puerto Rican food banquets.
Boricua
The articles published in the monthly newsletter "Boricua" are contributed by Puerto Rican students
as well as students from other minority organizations. Boricua has motivated other minority organizations
to start their own newsletters. Such publications help to sensitize the general UW-Madison population to
the needs and concerns of minority groups, while also providing a base for communication among minority
students.
