La Colectiva Cultural de Atzlan
History
In 1986, five students created La Colectiva Cultural de Aztlan as a support group for
Chicano/a undergraduate students at UW-Madison. Now, there are many active members who
are involved in different areas of college life.
Cultural
La Colectiva, as it is referred to, celebrates such events as: El 16 de Septiembre, El Dia
de los Muertos, La Virgen de Guadalupe, Cino de Mayo and the UW- Taste of Cultures. The
members also attend national conferences to discuss common problems and plan solutions.
Some examples include: National Association of Chicano Studies, National Hispanic
Leadership Conference, Midwest FOCO, Wisconsin Minority Student Leadership Conference
and LARES.
Political
In 1997, through fundraising, thirteen La Colectiva members attended the March in Washington,
D.C. La Colectiva also supports off-campus political groups such as the United Farmworkers of
America, United Migrant Opporunity Services, and Centro Hispano of Dane County.
Recruitment
Knowledge leads to power. La Colectiva wants to see more Latino/as pursuing higher education. To
encourage this, the group interacts with local middle schools through tutoring, mentoring and
campus tours. La Colectiva also works with the Office of Admissions and the Chicano Studies
Program on matters regarding recruitment and retention.
Social
All is not work here, you can lead a social life and be as active as you want. La Colectiva publishes
a newsletter with interesting articles, poems and art, attends classy bailes and informal dances,
fieldtrips and particpates in fundraisers .
