Information Specialist Internship Program (ISIP) 2007-2008

The UW Madison General Library System (GLS) is accepting applications for the Information Specialist Internship Program (ISIP) for the
2007-2008 academic year.  ISIP is designed to increase awareness of the role of information specialists in libraries, and to develop a diverse learning community that includes specialists from historically underrepresented groups.

ISIP Internship

ISIP provides second and third year undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison an experiential learning opportunity to obtain knowledge and hands-on experience in the field of information and library services.  The internship is a paid opportunity, starting at $9.50 per hour, with periodic increases.  Interns will be expected to commit 8-10 hours a week, with flexibility to accommodate academic schedules, for the duration of the internship for two consecutive academic years.

There are only five internships per academic year.  To ensure full consideration, completed applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. on September 7, 2007.

Columbia University Society of Fellows in the Humanities PostDoctoral Fellowships 2008-2009 - Deadline: October 8th

The Columbia Society of Fellows in the Humanities, with grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the William R. Kenan Trust, will appoint a number of post-doctoral fellows in the humanities for the academic year 2008-2009. The Society invites applications from qualified candidates who have received the Ph.D. between 1 January 2004 and 1 July 2008. Fellows are appointed as Lecturers in appropriate departments at Columbia University and as Mellon Fellows in the Society of Fellows. The fellowship is renewable for a second and third year. In the first year, Fellows teach one course per semester: at least one of these courses will be in the undergraduate general education program. In years two and three, Fellows teach one course per year. The annual stipend will be $52,000. Each Fellow will receive a research allowance of $4,000 per annum.

2007 Post-doctoral Fellowships in Paris at the Institut Pasteur in Paris - Next Deadline: Sept. 7

These three-year fellowship positions are open to American post-doctoral scientists wishing to pursue research at the Institut Pasteur. With 2500 people of 60 nationalities, the 130 research labs of the Institut Pasteur are devoted to the basic science of improving global public health with particular emphasis on infectious diseases. 2007 Sports Career/Internship Fair-Tuesday, September 18th from 3:30 – 6:30 PM

The Minnesota Twins are hosting the 3rd annual Sports Career/Internship Fair at the Metrodome on Tuesday, September 18th from 3:30 – 6:30 PM.

The 2007 Sports Career/Internship Fair will offer prospective employees the opportunity to learn about a variety of employment and internship opportunities with many teams and sports related organizations throughout the upper Midwest.  The fair will be exclusive to participants who register for the event in advance ($24.50) or at the door ($30, subject to availability).  The entry fee will include one lower reserved ticket to the 7:10 game that night against the Texas Rangers and a food coupon that can be redeemed for a hot dog and soft drink at one of the Metrodome concession stands.

Health Disparities Research Scholars Training Program for Postdocs-Application deadline: Sept. 1 or ASAP

The Center for the Study of Cultural Diversity in Healthcare and The Center for Women's Health Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health are now accepting applications for the Health Disparities Research Scholars Training Program (HDRS).
 
The HDRS is a postdoctoral level training program focusing on interdisciplinary research that addresses disparities in health status and health outcomes among minority mothers, infants, children and their families.  The program will provide an Individualized Career Development Plan with activities geared to each scholar's career level, interests, and learning needs.  Each plan will be formulated in collaboration with the scholar, the scholar's faculty mentors and the program directors.While each plan and associated coursework will vary, each Scholar will achieve competency in biostatistics, study design, research ethics, scientific presentations, community-academic partnership building and effective communication both verbally and in writing.
 
This program is open to all disciplines, including but not limited to Medicine, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Nutritional Sciences, and Population Health Sciences.

3 Project Assistant Openings with the UW Aquatic Sciences Center

PA for the WI Coastal GIS Applications Project (2 positions)
Duties: Provide technical assistance to the Wisconsin Coastal GIS Applications project. Implement web mapping sites for visualizing and disseminating geospatial and observational data for Wisconsin and the Great Lakes.  Develop geospatial technologies that assist coastal communities to adopt and implement comprehensive plans.
Requirements: * Knowledge of, and research experience in, geographic information science and environmental management. * Experience with ArcGIS version 9.x and Adobe Flash software, and a willingness to learn additional software and programming languages, as needed. * Knowledge of Open Geospatial Consortium standards and protocols that support interoperability of geospatial data. * Knowledge of FGDC and ISO metadata standards. * Outstanding written and oral communication skills. * Ability to work independently, as well as collaborate effectively with academic staff, faculty, administrative staff, and professional GIS specialists and resource managers. * Self-directed, energetic, and organized work habits.
Salary: 50% project assistant appointment for the Fall 2007 Semester. $1,370.88/month starting September 1, 2007.  This appointment includes a six-month probationary period.  Successful completion of this probationaryperiod is dependent upon job performance.  Any appointment beyond December 31, 2007 is dependent on availability of funding and job performance. Salaries are set by the 2006 contract between the State of Wisconsin and the Teaching Assistant's Association (TAA). Health insurance, tuition remission, and other benefits will accompany each position.

Informational Video Production PA         
Primary Duties: Assist with producing an informational/educational video about excessive algae on Lake Michigan beaches. Assist project leader in all aspects of video production. (Video will primarily contain one-person interviews.) Draft and/or edit narration for video. Research may include learning about nuisance algae and other stormwater runoff issues, synthesizing perspectives of scientists, state and local officials, farmers, and environmental groups, and identifying appropriate interview subjects.
Additional Duties: Depending on your experience and interest, work may include developing, designing, or creating associated exhibit ideas or materials.  May also include producing short "video vignettes" about research and outreach activities at the Aquatic Sciences Center.

Required Experience: * Professional or educational experience in video production (including pre- and post-production); writing for print, radio, or video/film; * Graduate and/or undergraduate degree in journalism and mass communication, communication arts, or life sciences communication desirable, but other degrees and experience will be considered. * Outstanding written and verbal communications skills.
Desirable Experience: * Interest in science communication, public education, science outreach, or educational exhibits * Interest in and knowledge of aquatic or environmental sciences * Software: Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Sound Forge, Microsoft Word.

Morgridge Center for Public Service Graduate Project Assistant Opening, Application deadline: September 13
The Morgridge Center has an opening for a Graduate Project Assistant: 50% appointment for 12 months, September 2007-August 2008, with possibility of renewal. This position focuses on support activities for 1) service-learning/community-based research (60%); 2) grant research, writing and development (35%) and other responsibilities as assigned (5%). Please see the attached position description for specifics.

Qualifications include: Familiarity with Morgridge Center for Public Service mission, programs and services; Familiarity with service-learning and/or community-based research as effective pedagogies; Knowledge of and experience with grants research, development and writing; Prior experience with program administration; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Excellent research skills; and Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs.

Financial Assistance for Child Care Fees

If you are an enrolled UW-Madison student parent, you my qualify for financial assistance toward child care fees through the Child Care Tuition Assistance Program. (CCTAP) CCTAP financially assists eligible low-income student parents maintain quality child care for their children. CCTAP is funded through student fees recommended by the Student Services Finance Committee and approved by the Chancellor and the Board of Regents. Applications are now being accepted for the fall
2007 and spring 2008 semesters.

APR has a variety of teams including Human Resources, Communications, and Research and Sponsored Programs.
