Invitation to KASA 8th annual Basketball Tournament - Registration Deadline October 13th- ASAP

UW-Madison KASA (Korean American Student Association) is having an 8th annual basketball tournament this coming Nov. 3rd and they would like to invite you to participate in this awesome event! They will be accepting 16 teams on a first come first serve bases. Each team must have at least 5 players and the maximum number of players per team will be 8. There will also be $30.00 participation fee per team ($3.75 per player assuming that you have 8 players). Madison SOS (Speak Out, Sister!)

For high school teen girls:
Discover How You Can Speak Out on the Issues that Matter to YOU!

Madison SOS (Speak Out, Sister!) is a city-wide forum for high school teen girls to explore leadership. We're hosting a fall series of workshops for high school young women from across Madison, and we want YOU to participate! Below are descriptions of our upcoming workshops. Community Advocate Stacy Harbaugh of the ACLU of Wisconsin will discuss the ways that you can fight for justice at any level, including your school, neighborhood, city, and state. Experience what it’s like to take action by participating in realistic activism scenarios.
The ACLU is biggest organization in the country fighting to protect constitutional civil liberties. The ACLU is best known for affecting change through litigation efforts. It also works for change through public education, community activism, public policy analysis, and governmental lobbying.

Join staff from Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin—women who have made their career out of advocating for women’s rights and reproductive justice—to learn about the ways that you can speak out on any issue that matters to you. Also examine other ways of making your message heard, like slam poetry, theater, and visual art.

Mayor Names New Alcohol Policy Coordinator

Madison – Mayor Dave Cieslewicz today named Katherine Plominski as the new Alcohol Policy Coordinator. The Alcohol Policy Coordinator position is jointly funded by the City of Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Madison to proactively address alcohol-related issues on campus and in the community.

“Alcohol-related issues play a major role in public safety, neighborhood quality and other significant community concerns,” said Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. “As our new Alcohol Policy Coordinator, Katherine will help us continue to develop creative, proactive initiatives to address these issues. Like her predecessor, she will work to develop these initiatives with my office, university leaders, students, neighborhood residents, bar owners, public safety officials and other stakeholders.”

Plominski is currently completing law school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She recently completed work as a Hayes Intern, working with the Madison Police Department and Dane County District Attorney’s office to develop strategies for addressing stalking on the UW campus. Plominski also served as a Judicial Intern for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. She is active in community service, volunteering for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Dane County.

“I am very excited to build upon the work of my predecessor and am looking forward to working alongside the Mayor and the various stakeholders in the Madison area,” Plominski said. “I hope that our efforts to address alcohol-related issues will continue to make Madison a better and safer place for everyone.” 

Plominski replaces Joel Plant, who was recently named as a Mayoral Aide. She will start October 29.

Teaching Assistant Positions in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese for Spring 2008, Application deadline: October 20

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is accepting applications from graduate students from other departments for a TA appointment to teach Spanish 226 for Spring Semester 2008.  The appointment is 35% (approx. $5416.95 per semester) and entails teaching a language class  2-3 days a week (50 or 75 min. class) under the supervision, guidance, and support of the language coordinator.  The position requires creating lesson plans, writing exams, grading, attendance at mandatory course meetings, as well as actual class time teaching and office hours.  All candidates must be at the ABD level and must have previous experience teaching at the Spanish 101-204 level for a minimum of 3 years or have previously taught Spanish 226 at the UW-Madison.
 
* All new applicants should send a letter or interest, current cv, and two letters of reference (one that addresses their teaching skills and one from their academic advisor addressing their academic standing and progress toward degree).

* All applicants who have taught previously in the Department should send a letter of interest, current CV, and a letter from their academic advisor (stating their academic standing and progress in their program).
 
Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience teaching Spanish 226 or the equivalent, native or near-native language skills, and a desire to work cooperatively with other TAs and the language coordinator.

Vilas Travel Fellowship, Application deadline: October 31

The Graduate Student Collaborative is pleased to announce the 2007-2008 Vilas Travel Fellowships for UW-Madison Dissertators and Final-Year MFA students. In 2006, more than 200 awards of $600 were granted for domestic or international research or conference travel and five awards of $1,500 were granted for international research or conference travel.

Deadline: 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Eligibility:

    * Graduate student dissertators or final-year MFA students who plan to present their research at a conference (e.g., program or poster) or travel for dissertation research purposes.
    * Dissertator status must be final before the first day of the Fall 2007 semester.
    * MFA students must be in their final year of work toward their degree.
    * Travel must occur between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008.
    * Note: There is a single application for both types of fellowship. Applications for international research travel not funded for $1,500 are automatically entered into competition for $600 awards.

Review Procedures: Priority will be given to those applicants who have never received a Vilas award. Other considerations during the review process include, but are not limited to: travel for research, sole-authorship over co-authorship, national over regional conferences, financial need, and originality of work. The review committee consists of a peer review committee of graduate students supported by a faculty advisory committee and the Graduate School Fellowships Office.

Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program, Application deadline: November 1

Deadlines:  Deadlines occur three times a year; the next round of deadlines occur on November 1, 2007; March 1, 2008; and June 1, 2008.  (Note: The deadline for receipt of materials is November 1 for the January program, March 1 for the June program, and June 1 for the September program.)

Stipend:  The fellowship stipend is $5,300 and is intended to cover only the living expenses for this fellowship's 10-week program in Washington, D.C.

Eligibility:  Applications for the fellowships are invited from graduate students through postdoctoral scholars in any physical, biological, or social science field or any field of engineering, medicine, health, or veterinary medicine as well as business, law, education, and other graduate and professional programs.  Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and those who have completed graduate studies or postdoctoral research within the last five years are eligible to apply.

Citizenship or Residency:  Unrestricted

Description:  The Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program is designed to engage graduate science, engineering, medical, veterinary, business, public policy, and law students in the analytical process that informs the creation of national policy-making with a science or technology element. As a result, students develop basic skills essential to working in the world of science policy.  During the program, interns engage in studies and activities throughout the National Academies. Some examples of projects interns conducted include developing: an outline of themes of leading research in remote sensing applications; a workshop on how scientists in developing countries can take better advantage of the new wireless communication networks to gain access to the Internet; and a background paper on the current state of knowledge about the demography of street-children, and on what is known about the cost and effectiveness of existing programs to help street-children and orphans in the U.S. and abroad.

Each intern is assigned to a senior staff member who acts as his or her mentor. The mentor provides guidance and ensures that the intern's time is focused on substantive work and activities.

Brittingham Viking Organization's Scholarship for University of Oslo's International Summer School (ISS), Application deadline: November 2

Each year the Brittingham Viking Organization (BVO) offers the Madison Viking Scholarship, which includes a free summer school term at the University of Oslo's International Summer School (ISS).  Study at ISS is a one-of-a-kind, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  Classes at ISS range from Norwegian language study to international relations to environment and energy policy, to name just a few.  All non-language classes are taught in English.  This scholarship is open to both undergraduate and graduate students at UW-Madison.

The scholarship covers tuition, housing, and a travel stipend for the transatlantic flight. Students will also have the opportunity to travel to other destinations in Scandinavia with other members of the BVO.

The application is due by midnight on November 2, 2007. Scholarship winners will be notified on December 1, 2007.

Michael Fields Agricultural Institute Public Policy Internships, Application deadline: November 2

"I could not have asked for a better introduction into a career in sustainable agriculture policy."  - former intern

What the Policy Internship Offers - Policy interns will have the opportunity to assist in coordinating the Fiscal Year 2009 grassroots agricultural appropriations campaign; help develop new grassroots contacts in key congressional and senate districts nationally and develop similar strategies for Wisconsin grassroots network development; participate in state sustainable agricultural policy development; join policy conference calls of groups such as the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture and the Midwest Sustainable Agriculture Working Group; and work as interns for two weeks with the principal sustainable agriculture advocacy office in Washington, D.C., the Sustainable Agriculture Coalition.  They will be able to attend at least one region's Sustainable Agriculture Working Group meeting as well as one other significant conference .  The interns will be able to conduct background research on an agricultural policy topic that both benefits the movement and is of personal interest to them; MFAI will assist them in publicizing and distributing their findings.  The interns will have an opportunity to write an opinion editorial and write press releases and/or newsletter articles on policy issues. MFAI's policy interns will be able to participate to the degree they wish to in the training workshops and other activities of the regional "CRAFT" organization, which trains and coordinates sustainable agriculture interns in several upper Midwestern states. 

The Policy Program Director will commit to providing supervision of no less than 2 hours per week after an intensive introduction and orientation.

Expectations - MFAI will expect no less than a 50% time commitment from the policy interns.  Unlike MFAI's other internships, which are located in East Troy, policy interns will operate from Madison, the location of MFAI's Policy Program Director.   The interns will be responsible for arranging their own housing, food, computer access and other needs. 

Duration/Schedule - We offer these internships for five months, from early January through early June.  Start and end dates are negotiable once interns are selected, and the weekly schedule of internship hours worked is flexible.

Potential Candidates - We will consider any candidate with a demonstrated interest in sustainable agriculture and/or agricultural policy.  We place a priority on candidates who see sustainable agricultural policy as a likely career course and pay attention to the quality of the writing sample submitted.

Finances - MFAI will pay a $400/month stipend, up to $50/month in non-transportation expenses, such as computer maintenance, paper, and office supplies, up to $50/month in phone, Internet service and mailing costs, and up to $100/month in transportation.  We will pay for a roundtrip ticket to Washington, plus metro and lodging expenses while in Washington, D.C. for two weeks.  We will also cover registration to participate in the CRAFT trainings and events and will assist in your attending at least one other major movement-related conference.

Diversity Best Practice Award recipients selected Presented at the 6th Annual Racial Justice Summit: Communities of Opportunity

The Communities of Opportunity Racial Justice Summit is presented by a community collaboration of 38 Madison organizations and businesses.  As part of the Summit, we are highlighting the outstanding work in diversity of the 42 Dane County businesses and organizations that participated in a Diversity and Best Practices Questionnaire.  A Resource Binder will be distributed at the Summit showcasing all of the Best Practices in Diversity that were collected through the Questionnaire, and 4 Awards will be bestowed to businesses and/or organizations who were the frontrunners in each category in the questionnaire. 

A selection committee was comprised of volunteers from Summit corporate sponsors and non-profit supporters.  This cross-section of volunteers participated in a blind selection process to decide on the winners.  There are so many organizations doing outstanding work in our community – it was very difficult to make the final selection!  The 2007 Diversity Best Practice Award Recipients are:

These awards will be bestowed by Dane County Executive, Kathleen Falk, over the lunch at the 2007 Community Racial Justice Summit.  The Summit will be held on October 30th from 8:00-3:30 at the Monona Terrace.  The goal of the Racial Justice Summit is to bring together community leaders and stakeholders to work together to create a strategic agenda to eliminate racism in our community.  We will hear from nationally known keynote speakers and researchers, present successful local models, honor community leaders doing outstanding work in the field of Racial Justice, learn about other community models, and work together to create a community plan.

Presenters at the Summit include:  Keynote Speaker Phoebe Eng; Jason Reece of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity; Amaad Rivera from United for a Fair Economy; and Suzanne Katerberg representing Partners for a Racism Free Community.

their career as a physician.
