Graduate Funding for Study/Research in Montpellier, France, Application deadline: October 1
Franco-American Cultural Exchange (FACE), Montpellier, France
Spring Semester Graduate Study in France
Application deadline for Spring 2008 is October 1st, 2007.
The University of Wisconsin – Madison (UW) has received funds from both the French Foreign Ministry's Franco-American Cultural Exchange (FACE) program and the U.S. National Science Foundation to support graduate student exchanges with universities and research centers in Montpellier, France, lead by Ecole National Superieure Agronomique de Montpellier (Agro-M). UW students have the opportunity to live and study in Montpellier – a beautiful, 1,000 year old city in southwest France near the Mediterranean Sea. Like Madison, it is a popular medium-sized university city and the seat of local government.
The program is designed to enhance graduate education in both France and the U.S. by providing opportunities for graduate students to do research and study in the other country for one spring semester. Our specific goals are to:
* Train global scientists with concrete technical skills and a broad perspective on how science works within specific social, regulatory, and political contexts.
* Teach the cross-cultural competence that students need to compete effectively in the international environment.
* Demonstrate how to apply interdisciplinary tools to solve real-world problems.
* Model ways to form collaborative alliances so useful in one’s career.
The program emphasizes cross-cultural environmental and conservation studies. We expect our program to have long-lasting effects on students' career opportunities. By working in alternative cultural and political contexts, students will gain cross-cultural competence and learn to apply interdisciplinary tools to solve real-world problems. This experience should improve your ability to form collaborations and work effectively in an international environment

Unique Spring 2008 Service-Learning Course: "Writing a Better Way"
Consider joining an unusual service-learning course in Spring Semester 2008. Called “Writing a Better Way” this credit-bearing, writing-focused course will bring graduate ate students and undergraduate students together with UW employees to form a unique learning community designed to improve literacy opportunities for workers on campus.
Much of the class time will be spent in one-one-one or small group tutorials to help employees who wish to improve their writing skills. Many of the employees are immigrants who want more practice with written language and many need writing to advance in their employment. We also will meet together in seminar style and use writing and talking to learn about each other and about ways that language can either unite or divide us. Depending on how things go, we might collaborate on a whole-class project around issues of literacy on campus. You do not need to be the world’s best writer to participate. Ideally everyone in the class will learn writing a better way: more effectively, more inclusively, more compassionately.
As a graduate student you would gain direct experience with service learning, an increasing desirable aspect of training for the professoriate. Nearly all of the work for the course would occur in the regular hours that we meet (two days a week for 75 minutes). You would have a chance to have input into designing activities and providing leadership for undergraduates.
The class will be small. There is room for five graduate students only. Knowledge of Spanish or Hmong would be a plus. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity and when the course will be offered, contact Professor Deborah Brandt, Department of English, dlbrandt@wisc.edu

Looking for Exceptional Black Male Sophomores
The Institute for Responsible Citizenship is currently accepting applications for its summer programs in Washington, DC and New York City. The program in Washington focuses on public service, with most participants interested in careers in law, politics, and business. The New York City program focuses on career achievement and citizenship in the financial services industry.
Washington Program Details
Each summer, twenty-four of the most promising black male college sophomores in the country are given the chance to intern in the nation's capital while taking rigorous classes at Georgetown University. The courses in government and economics are designed to provide these young men with the skills necessary to critically analyze the world's problems while adhering to a deep respect for civil liberties. When the students are not in class or at work, they are often called upon to attend social functions designed to help them network in their field. Personal meetings with such leaders as Colin Powell, John Lewis, and Clarence Thomas are made possible by the intimate nature of the program.
The program runs from the first Sunday in June to the last Saturday in July and is a two-summer commitment (accommodations are made for students on the quarter system). During their first summer, students' primary responsibilities outside of their internships are their academic courses. The following summer, in addition to their internships, mentorship with the latest cohort of Institute students and professional development become priorities. Tuition and housing are paid for by the Institute, while students are expected to pay for their transportation and food. In addition, those not placed in paid internships will receive a stipend in the amount of $3000. You should be a sophomore to apply, however, juniors are considered if they are committed to attending graduate or professional school directly following their senior year.
The average GPA for participants is a 3.65. A competitive applicant will have a strong GPA along with a track record of service to others.
Financial Services Program Details
The Institute for Responsible Citizenship is excited to announce a new program in conjunction with KPMG, one of the foremost accounting firms in the country. This year, KPMG was ranked among the top 100 companies to work for by Fortune Magazine, and ranked 37th among large-size companies. More information about KPMG can be found at http://www.kpmgcareers.com. Twelve black male college sophomores will be selected to take part in this year’s program. The program runs from the first Sunday in June until the last Saturday in July.
Students selected for this opportunity will spend the summer in New York City and work at the company's headquarters for eight weeks. The twelve young men will live together in housing provided for program participants. Students will be placed in the departments of Audit, Tax, or Advisory Services and be paired with a high-level executive to work with for the summer. Exemplary performance will be rewarded with an invitation to return for a second summer and possibly result in full-time employment following graduation.
Other program highlights
Students majoring in Finance, Accounting, or Management Information Systems with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better should send their applications in right away.
More information about both programs, along with the application, can be found on the web at http://www.i4rc.org/programs.htm.
The application deadlines are:
